¿Qué es Zika Virus Disease?

Zika virus was first identified in 1947 in a rhesus monkey in the Zika Forest of Uganda, with human cases documented since 1952. It gained global attention with major outbreaks in the Americas in 2015-2016 due to its severe link to microcephaly and other neurological conditions.

Síntomas

  • Fever (typically mild)
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache

Prevención

  • Prevent mosquito bites: Use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and stay in screened or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Eliminate mosquito breeding sites: Remove standing water from containers around your home.
  • Prevent sexual transmission: Use condoms or abstain from sex if you or your partner have recently traveled to or live in a Zika-affected area.
  • Pregnant women should avoid travel to areas with active Zika transmission.
  • No vaccine is currently available.
