Qu'est-ce que Plague?

Plague has historically caused devastating pandemics, most notably the 'Black Death' in the 14th century, which killed an estimated 30-50% of Europe's population. The causative bacterium, *Yersinia pestis*, was identified by Alexandre Yersin in 1894 during the Hong Kong pandemic, greatly advancing understanding and treatment of the disease. Its history underscores its profound impact on human civilization and public health.

SymptĂ´mes

  • Bubonic Plague (most common): Swollen, painful lymph nodes called buboes (often in groin, armpit, or neck), sudden onset of fever, chills, weakness, and headache.
  • Septicemic Plague: Fever, chills, extreme weakness, abdominal pain, shock, and bleeding into skin and other organs.
  • Pneumonic Plague (most severe): Rapidly developing pneumonia with fever, headache, weakness, chest pain, and a cough with bloody or watery sputum; this form can spread human-to-human.

Transmission

Plague primarily spreads through the bites of infected fleas that have fed on infected rodents. Direct contact with infected animal tissues or fluids, such as during hunting or butchering, can also transmit the disease. Pneumonic plague can uniquely spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected individual coughs.

Période de Contagiosité : Varies by disease

Prévention

  • Avoid contact with sick or dead rodents and their fleas.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or permethrin when in areas where plague is active.
  • Prevent rodent access to homes and food sources by keeping areas clean.
  • Do not handle animal carcasses in plague-endemic areas without proper protective equipment.
  • Take prophylactic antibiotics if you've had close contact with a pneumonic plague patient (as advised by medical professionals).

Rabbit plague from China will wipe out 90% of wild UK population

A rabbit plague from China will wipe out 90 per cent on the wild UK population, an expert has said. An aggressive virus, Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD), has seized bunnies across the globe and has been silently decimating British populations for more than a decade. But now a new, more virulent and deadly variant is thought to have reached UK shores. RHD kills rabbits in just two days, causing massive internal bleeding that seeps through their noses and bottoms. It is very contagious and there is no cure. It comes after another viral disease, Myxomatosis, ravaged rabbit populations in the 1950s. Richard Saunders, vet advisor for the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF), told The Daily Mail: 'Myxomatosis wiped out around 90 per cent of the rabbits in the UK, but then that population ...

Yoga protocol launched to target diabetes, hypertension, obesity As lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and mental health issues plague millions of people in India, the country is reassessing health care and this time around, the focus is on "prevention." During her Union Budget 2026 speech, Minister of Finance Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized how diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity were becoming more and more common in India. But can "prevention" really help? Today, two out of every three deaths in India are due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The earliest evidence for an outbreak of plague has been uncovered at late stone age cemeteries in south-eastern Siberia where dozens of hunter-gatherers and their children were buried.
