Gonorrhoea has been recognized for centuries, with descriptions appearing in ancient texts dating back to biblical times. The bacterium *Neisseria gonorrhoeae* was first identified in 1879. The introduction of antibiotics revolutionized its treatment, though antibiotic resistance has become a significant public health challenge in recent decades.
Gonorrhoea is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex, with an infected person. It can also be passed from a pregnant person to their baby during childbirth, which can lead to severe eye infections in the newborn.

Gonorrhoea infections are spreading faster than before in Finland, with cases likely to surpass 2,000 this year. Young adults are driving much of the increase. Finland reported 1,854 gonorrhoea cases in 2024, and this year the total could exceed 2,000, according to Eija Hiltunen-Back, a specialist in dermatology and venereology at Helsinki University Hospital (HUS). "Infections have climbed steadily since the post-pandemic period, following a wider European trend," Hiltunen-Back explained. Figures from the national infectious disease register show the upward swing began in 2022. The infection has shifted to younger age groups, where multiple sexual partners are more common, facilitating the spread, according to Hiltunen-Back. As in previous years, gonorrhoea cases in 2024 were concentrated...

Sexually transmitted infections are surging in Australia, prompting health experts to issue a warning. There were 5866 diagnoses of syphilis and 44,210 gonorrhoea diagnoses in Australia in 2024 -- double what they were a decade ago. The majority of cases were in men, according to the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney. Meanwhile Australia's most common STI -- chlamydia -- saw 101,742 diagnoses in 2024. Around half were in people age 20 to 29. The shocking revelations were unveiled at the Australasian HIV&AIDS Conference in Adelaide earlier this month. "Sexually transmissible infections can be passed on to others, but in most instances can be easily treated," said Dr Skye McGregor, an epidemiologist based at the Kirby Institute and UNSW. "However, if left untreated sexually transmissible infect...

In 2015, Thailand began surveillance for N. gonorrhoeae urethritis as part of the World Health Organization Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (EGASP; https://www.who.int/initiatives/gonococcal-antimicrobial-surveillance-programme). Through EGASP surveillance, 31 urethritis-causing N. meningitidis isolates were collected from men in Thailand during 2017-2023 (10). All cases were successfully treated with 250 mg or 500 mg intramuscular ceftriaxone in accordance with national guidelines for male patients with urethral symptoms and gram-negative intracellular diplococci. The national reference laboratory (accredited according to ISO 15189:2012) confirmed N. meningitidis in isolates by using culture and biochemical characteristics of Neisseria spp. bacteria.
