What is Legionellosis?

Legionellosis first gained widespread recognition following a major outbreak in 1976 at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The causative bacterium, *Legionella pneumophila*, was identified by the CDC shortly after. This event significantly advanced public health understanding of waterborne diseases and the importance of environmental controls in buildings.

Symptoms

  • Fever and chills
  • Cough (may be dry or produce phlegm)
  • Muscle aches and headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Confusion or other mental changes (in severe cases)

Transmission

Legionellosis is primarily transmitted through the inhalation of small water droplets (aerosols) containing *Legionella* bacteria. These contaminated aerosols are generated from man-made water systems such as cooling towers, hot tubs, showers, decorative fountains, and large plumbing systems. It is not known to spread directly from person to person.

Contagious Period: Varies by disease

Prevention

  • Maintain water systems: Regularly clean and disinfect cooling towers, hot tubs, decorative fountains, and other engineered water systems.
  • Control water temperature: Keep hot water hot (above 120Β°F/49Β°C) and cold water cold (below 77Β°F/25Β°C) to inhibit bacterial growth.
  • Prevent stagnation: Flush unused water lines and showerheads periodically.
  • No vaccine available: Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent Legionellosis.

UK health agency investigating London Legionnaires' disease cluster

United Kingdom 2026-03-09
Active

The wider risk to public health is said to be low as the disease is not usually passed from person to person. Specialists from Britain's Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are investigating a cluster of Legionnaires' disease cases linked to north and southwest London. The public health body is working to discover whether the cases are linked and to establish their possible source. Legionnaires' disease is a severe pneumonia, which is caught by breathing in tiny droplets of water containing Legionella bacteria. These usually come from sources such as air conditioning systems, showers and taps which are not properly designed, installed or maintained. To become infected with the disease, Legionella bacteria in the air have to be inhaled as tiny water droplets from a contaminated source. The wider...
