Nipah Virus

Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus that causes severe encephalitis and respiratory illness with fatality rates up to 75%. In early 2026, WHO confirmed two outbreaks: healthcare worker cases in West Bengal, India (January) and a fatal case in Bangladesh (February). Nipah spreads from infected bats, pigs, or contaminated food, and can transmit person-to-person in healthcare settings. No approved vaccine or specific treatment exists.
