What is Plague?

Plague has historically caused devastating pandemics, most notably the 'Black Death' in the 14th century, which killed an estimated 30-50% of Europe's population. The causative bacterium, *Yersinia pestis*, was identified by Alexandre Yersin in 1894 during the Hong Kong pandemic, greatly advancing understanding and treatment of the disease. Its history underscores its profound impact on human civilization and public health.

Symptoms

  • Bubonic Plague (most common): Swollen, painful lymph nodes called buboes (often in groin, armpit, or neck), sudden onset of fever, chills, weakness, and headache.
  • Septicemic Plague: Fever, chills, extreme weakness, abdominal pain, shock, and bleeding into skin and other organs.
  • Pneumonic Plague (most severe): Rapidly developing pneumonia with fever, headache, weakness, chest pain, and a cough with bloody or watery sputum; this form can spread human-to-human.

Transmission

Plague primarily spreads through the bites of infected fleas that have fed on infected rodents. Direct contact with infected animal tissues or fluids, such as during hunting or butchering, can also transmit the disease. Pneumonic plague can uniquely spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected individual coughs.

Contagious Period: Varies by disease

Prevention

  • Avoid contact with sick or dead rodents and their fleas.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or permethrin when in areas where plague is active.
  • Prevent rodent access to homes and food sources by keeping areas clean.
  • Do not handle animal carcasses in plague-endemic areas without proper protective equipment.
  • Take prophylactic antibiotics if you've had close contact with a pneumonic plague patient (as advised by medical professionals).
