Haiti carries one of the highest disease burden profiles in the Western Hemisphere, with ongoing cholera transmission, endemic malaria, and widespread foodborne and waterborne illness. The healthcare system has severely limited capacity, and many areas lack reliable access to medical care. The CDC and U.S. State Department recommend reconsidering or avoiding non-essential travel to Haiti due to security conditions.

Malaria is present throughout Haiti at all elevations, including urban areas. P. falciparum is the dominant species. Chloroquine or atovaquone-proguanil prophylaxis is recommended for all travelers.
Water infrastructure is severely compromised. Drink only sealed bottled water and avoid all ice. Cholera transmission via contaminated water and food remains active. Eat only fully cooked foods from sources you can verify.
