Peru's health risks vary dramatically by altitude zone. The Amazon lowlands carry risk for malaria, yellow fever, dengue, and leishmaniasis, while the Andean highlands present risk for altitude sickness and cold exposure. Lima and the coastal desert strip are generally low risk for vector-borne disease. Food and waterborne illness including traveler's diarrhea, typhoid, and hepatitis A are risks throughout the country, particularly at lower altitudes.
