Is rabies really 100% fatal once symptoms appear?

Yes, rabies is virtually 100% fatal once clinical symptoms develop. Only 29 people have ever survived symptomatic rabies worldwide, and most had severe neurological deficits. This makes prevention through vaccination and prompt post-exposure treatment absolutely critical. Once symptoms start, there is no effective treatment.

What should I do if bitten by an animal?

Rodents (mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks) almost never carry rabies. Birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians don't get rabies. Bats are highest risk in U.S.—any contact warrants evaluation.

Do I need rabies shots if I never saw a bite mark?

Yes, if you had direct contact with a bat while sleeping, if a bat was in the room with an unattended child, or if someone mentally impaired/intoxicated was alone with a bat. Bat teeth are tiny and bites may not be visible. When in doubt, seek medical evaluation—the consequences of untreated rabies are fatal.

How long do I have to get rabies treatment after exposure?

Start PEP as soon as possible after exposure. Rabies has a long incubation period (weeks to months, rarely >1 year), but once symptoms appear, it's too late. The virus travels slowly from bite to brain—PEP works by building immunity before the virus reaches the nervous system. Even delayed PEP is better than none.

Should I get pre-exposure rabies vaccination?

Pre-exposure vaccination recommended for: veterinarians, animal handlers, laboratory workers, spelunkers (cave explorers), travelers to high-risk countries (especially if remote from medical care), wildlife rehabilitators. It doesn't eliminate need for PEP after exposure but reduces number of shots required.
