Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands spanning a vast equatorial range. Health risks vary dramatically by island and region — Bali has well-developed tourist infrastructure, while Papua and Kalimantan carry high malaria burden. Volcanic activity and tsunamis are additional environmental hazards. Rabies is endemic and pre-exposure vaccination is strongly recommended.
