What is Listeriosis, Confirmed?

*Listeria monocytogenes* was first identified in animals in the early 20th century and later recognized as a significant human pathogen. The bacterium was named after Joseph Lister, a pioneer in antiseptic surgery. Large foodborne outbreaks in the latter half of the 20th century significantly raised public health awareness regarding Listeriosis.

Symptoms

  • Mild/Flu-like (can occur in healthy adults or pregnant women): Fever, muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea.
  • Severe/Invasive (if it spreads to the nervous system): Headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions.
  • In pregnant women: May cause mild maternal symptoms but can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening infection in the newborn.

Transmission

Listeriosis is primarily transmitted through the consumption of food contaminated with *Listeria monocytogenes*. Common sources include raw or undercooked meats, unpasteurized dairy products, soft cheeses, deli meats, and raw produce. Pregnant women can also transmit the bacteria to their unborn or newborn babies.

Contagious Period: Varies by disease

Prevention

  • Avoid unpasteurized milk and dairy products.
  • Cook raw meat and poultry thoroughly to their safe internal temperatures.
  • Wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.
  • Reheat deli meats and hot dogs to steaming hot (165°F/74°C).
  • Clean refrigerator regularly and maintain temperature at or below 40°F (4°C).
  • No vaccine is currently available for Listeriosis.
